Year 3 – Maths
Year 3 is a milestone year where students transition from basic arithmetic to strategic mathematical thinking. At NexGen Tutoring, our program is specifically designed to support students as they encounter more complex operations and prepare for their first NAPLAN assessments.
We focus on building “number sense”—the ability to play with numbers, understand fractions, and approach word problems with a systematic plan.
What Your Child Will Master
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, our year 3 program deepens knowledge across four critical areas:
- Number & Algebraic Expansion: We solidify place value for larger numbers and bridge the gap to multiplication and division. Students develop automaticity with their times tables and learn to regroup numbers confidently during multi-step addition and subtraction.
- Introduction to Fractions: Students begin to visualize and understand simple fractions (like halves, quarters, and thirds), connecting them to real-life objects and sharing scenarios.
- Measurement, Geometry & Time: We move into the precise world of measurement, covering length, mass, and capacity. Students learn to read both analogue and digital clocks and begin identifying angles within 2D and 3D shapes.
- Statistics & Chance Experiments: Your child will learn to conduct simple chance experiments and represent their findings through more sophisticated column graphs and tables, learning how to compare data sets to find the “most” or “least.”
NAPLAN Readiness & Confidence
We understand that Year 3 is the first time many students face formal standardized testing. Our curriculum naturally integrates NAPLAN style questions into regular lessons to build “test-day stamina” without the stress.
| Focus Area | How we prepare them |
|---|---|
| Question Literacy | We teach students how to decode "wordy" math problems to find the actual equation. |
| Strategy Selection | Students learn multiple ways to solve a problem so they have a "Plan B" if they get stuck. |
| Accuracy & Review | We emphasize showing working-out and checking for "reasonableness" to catch simple errors. |
| Time Management | We practice solving problems within structured timeframes to build confidence. |
The NexGen Advantage
- Systematic Problem-Solving: We provide a “toolkit” of strategies, moving students away from guessing and toward logical reasoning.
- Small-Group Attention: Our tutors provide immediate, personalized feedback, ensuring that gaps in foundational knowledge are filled quickly.
- Balanced Curriculum: We provide a mix of explicit instruction, guided worksheets, and hands-on “challenge questions” to keep students engaged and extended.
- Real-World Connections: From calculating change with money to reading maps and plans, we show students that math is a language they use every day.
Building Foundations for the Future
By the end of Year 3 at NexGen, students leave with more than just the right answers— they leave with mathematical resilience. By mastering the fundamentals of multiplication and fractions early, they are perfectly positioned to tackle the “sophisticated numerical patterns” of Year 4 with ease and excitement.
