Year 3 – English

Year 3 is where students move from basic decoding into stronger fluency, richer comprehension and more controlled writing. At NexGen Tutoring, our Year 3 English program is aligned with the Australian Curriculum and continues to develop the three key strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Across the year, students work with short novels, picture books, poetry and age appropriate information texts. They learn to explain ideas more clearly, write in organised paragraphs, and use spelling and punctuation conventions with greater accuracy. Lessons combine explicit teaching, guided practice and independent work, supported by structured worksheets and regular feedback so students can build confidence and consistency.

Reading and Viewing
Students will:

    • Identify main ideas and key details, and summarise sections of a text
    • Answer literal questions and make simple inferences using evidence from the text

Writing
Students will learn to:

    • Organise writing into clear paragraphs with logical sequencing
    • Use stronger sentence structures, including conjunctions to join ideas
    • Use punctuation accurately, including capital letters, full stops, question marks, commas in lists and apostrophes in contractions and possession
    • Plan, draft, reread and improve writing for clarity and correctness

Spelling, Grammar, & Vocabulary
Students will:

• • • Apply spelling patterns and strategies to spell unfamiliar words more accurately
    • Use word parts (prefixes and suffixes) to build meaning and improve spelling
    • Recognise and use key grammar features such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns
    • Develop topic vocabulary and literary language to strengthen both reading and writing

Speaking & Listening
Students will practise:

NAPLAN Preparation

In the lead-up to NAPLAN, students will practise key skills and question styles across:
