Year 2 – Maths
Year 2 is a foundational year where “playing with numbers” evolves into a structured understanding of the mathematical world. At NexGen Tutoring, our Year 2 program is designed to build the rock-solid numeracy habits required for the shift into middle primary school. We focus on moving students from basic counting to numerical fluency, ensuring they don’t just find the answer, but understand the process behind it.
What Your Child Will Master
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, our program focuses on three core pillars of development.
- Number & Algebraic Thinking: We master place value by partitioning and regrouping numbers, ensuring students understand the “size” of a number. Your child will build automaticity in addition and subtraction using mental strategies and explore the beginnings of multiplication through equal grouping and fair sharing.
- Measurement & Geometry: Students move from informal to formal units of measurement for length, mass, and capacity. We bring geometry to life by exploring the features of 2D and 3D shapes and introducing the language of time—learning to tell time on a clock and manage simple calendars.
- Statistics & Probability: We teach students how to be “data detectives.” They will learn to collect information, organize it into lists and tables, and create their very own picture and column graphs to answer questions about the world around them.
- Financial Literacy: Our lessons include real-life contexts for using money, helping students recognize coin values and solve simple “shopping” problems to build early independence.
